The Market for Game Developers in Canada

The Market for Game Developers in Canada

The Market for Game Developers in Canada

Quebec's vibrant game development scene has been thriving since the early 1990s, establishing itself as a powerhouse in North America's video game industry. With the continuous evolution of technology, the industry has seen significant transformations. While traditional AAA console games remain popular, the rise of e-sports, mobile game development, and AR/VR has captivated a new generation of developers and gamers. Through these changes, Quebec has emerged as a global hub for entertainment and technology, offering game developers a plethora of opportunities.

According to Investissement Québec, the province is home to over 250 game development studios that produce world-class games, generate billions in annual revenue, and employ thousands of people across Quebec. Notably, some of the top video game companies, such as Ubisoft, Beenox, and Eidos-Montréal, are based in Quebec, contributing significantly to the industry’s growth.

Results from the Entertainment Software Association of Canada's 2021 industry survey reveal that video game companies contribute $5.5 billion to Canada’s GDP and employ 32,000 full-time professionals, a 17 percent increase since 2019. For those looking to enter this dynamic field, there are abundant opportunities for junior-level and intermediate developers, who make up more than 75 percent of the Canadian video game workforce. Whether you're just starting out or advancing your skills, the game development industry in Quebec offers a wealth of exciting career prospects!
