[Instructor Spotlight] Robert Wong Tek Kong, Inspiring Future Innovators in AR & VR Development

Nov 26, 2024

In this spotlight, we introduce Robert Wong Tek Kong, a passionate instructor for our XR Development with Unity course. As an experienced engineer and software developer, he brings a unique blend of technical expertise and creativity to help learners master immersive technology.

“Development is like a constant puzzle you have to solve. It always changes, and you have an infinite amount of tools to complete the puzzle. Because of this, every day feels different, challenging, and ultimately very rewarding.”

Meet Robert Wong Tek Kong

Robert’s journey began in mechanical engineering, but his career soon took a creative turn. While working as a Professional Engineer, he discovered a passion for programming and began creating VR and AR tools on the side.

“I started making VR and AR Engineering tools for fun on the side. Eventually, I realized that I enjoyed doing this a lot more then sizing piping, managing construction and looking at ASME Codes all day.”

Robert’s impressive client portfolio, including organizations like Untethered Technologies, Tactile Orthopedics, and the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth, demonstrates his versatility and dedication to creating meaningful impacts across industries. His experience spans multiple fields:

  • Engineering: Developed VR simulations and AR tools for O&G facilities.

  • Arts: Created interactive experiences for public murals, bringing art to life at institutions like the University of Calgary and Calgary Police Headquarters.

  • Indigenous Initiatives: Honoured Indigenous culture through AR memorials, life-size dioramas, and digital walking trails.

  • Medical Training: Designed an AR knee surgery training tool that monitors crucial surgical angles.

  • Environmental Education: Currently developing an AR simulation to teach environmental restoration practices.

  • Comic Books: Collaborating with Indigenous artists to bring comic books to life through augmented reality.

Teaching Philosophy and Approach

Robert’s teaching style is anchored in a simple yet profound philosophy: “Always a Student, Never a Master.” He views himself as a fellow learner, creating a collaborative environment where learners are encouraged to ask questions and explore their curiosity. “I’m not just a teacher,” he says, “but a member of the cohort who happens to know more.” His approach turns each workshop into a conversation, fostering a space where everyone learns from each other.

Although he’s relatively new to formal teaching, Robert’s background in mentoring—whether guiding junior engineers, coaching public speaking through Toastmasters, or teaching youth programming in Indigenous communities—enables him to connect with learners on a personal level. His commitment to nurturing a collaborative learning environment resonates with learners, many of whom feel empowered to pursue their dreams in tech.

Inspiring the Next Generation

For Robert, the most rewarding part of teaching is the diversity of talent in his cohorts.

“From Dentists, to Architects, to literal Rocket Scientists (Yes we had one), it's amazing what wide range of people end up in this program. Getting these amazing humans in front of a headset and developing even at a fundamental level can let them create things I would never dream of, and that thought is so cool.”

One memorable experience involved a former learner who asked Robert to serve as a job reference. “A few weeks later, the company called me, and I gave them my honest opinion about the student. Eventually, I found out they got the job!” he recalls. “It felt really rewarding to know I impacted someone’s life by helping them transition into a new career, much like I did.”

A Lifelong Learner with a Passion for Dance

Outside of the classroom, Robert is an avid dancer. With over a decade of experience in breaking (breakdancing), he’s part of the breaking crew “Peoples Militia” and has even co-founded Calgary’s hustle dance community, YYCHustle. Dance has become a way for him to explore his creativity and connect with people worldwide, just as programming allows him to create immersive experiences that captivate and engage audiences.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Developers

For learners looking to enter the world of AR and VR, Robert offers this advice:

“Create a portfolio of projects by making something you’re passionate about. Working on something you love teaches you more than anything else, and it’s the best way to build your skills.”

His emphasis on project-based learning and personal growth reflects his own journey and the wisdom he imparts to his learners.

With his industry expertise, genuine passion for teaching, and commitment to learner success, Robert is more than an instructor—he’s a mentor and an inspiration to future developers eager to make their mark on the world.
